1Ashtapadee:

2Where there is no mother, father, children, friends or siblings

3O my mind, there, only the Naam, the Name of the Lord, shall be with you as your help and support.

4Where the great and terrible Messenger of Death shall try to crush you,

5there, only the Naam shall go along with you.

6Where the obstacles are so very heavy,

7the Name of the Lord shall rescue you in an instant.

8By performing countless religious rituals, you shall not be saved.

9The Name of the Lord washes off millions of sins.

10As Gurmukh, chant the Naam, O my mind.

11O Nanak, you shall obtain countless joys. ||1||

12The rulers of the all the world are unhappy;

13one who chants the Name of the Lord becomes happy.

14Acquiring hundreds of thousands and millions, your desires shall not be contained.

15Chanting the Name of the Lord, you shall find release.

16By the countless pleasures of Maya, your thirst shall not be quenched.

17Chanting the Name of the Lord, you shall be satisfied.

18Upon that path where you must go all alone,

19there, only the Lord's Name shall go with you to sustain you.

20On such a Name, O my mind, meditate forever.

21O Nanak, as Gurmukh, you shall obtain the state of supreme dignity. ||2||

22You shall not be saved by hundreds of thousands and millions of helping hands.

23Chanting the Naam, you shall be lifted up and carried across.

24Where countless misfortunes threaten to destroy you,

25the Name of the Lord shall rescue you in an instant.

26Through countless incarnations, you were born, then died and then born again.

27Chanting the Name of the Lord, you shall come to rest in peace.

28The ego is polluted by a filth which can never be washed off.

29The Name of the Lord erases millions of sins.

30Chant such a Name with love, O my mind.

31O Nanak, it is obtained in the Company of the Holy. ||3||

32On that path where the miles cannot be counted,

33there, the Name of the Lord shall be your sustenance.

34On that journey of total, pitch-black darkness,

35the Name of the Lord shall be the Light with you.

36On that journey where no one knows you,

37with the Name of the Lord, you shall be recognized.

38Where there is awesome and terrible heat and blazing sunshine,

39there, the Name of the Lord will give you shade.

40Where thirst, O my mind, torments you to cry out,

41there, O Nanak, the Ambrosial Name, Har, Har, shall rain down upon you. ||4||

42Unto the devotee, the Naam is an article of daily use.

43The minds of the humble Saints are at peace.

44The Name of the Lord is the Support of His servants.

45By the Name of the Lord, millions have been saved.

46The Saints chant the Praises of the Lord, day and night.

47Har, Har - the Lord's Name - the Holy use it as their healing medicine.

48The Lord's Name is the treasure of the Lord's servant.

49The Supreme Lord God has blessed His humble servant with this gift.

50Mind and body are imbued with ecstasy in the Love of the One Lord.

51O Nanak, careful and discerning understanding is the way of the Lord's humble servant. ||5||

52The Name of the Lord is the path of liberation for His humble servants.

53With the food of the Name of the Lord, His servants are satisfied.

54The Name of the Lord is the beauty and delight of His servants.

55Chanting the Lord's Name, one is never blocked by obstacles.

56The Name of the Lord is the glorious greatness of His servants.

57Through the Name of the Lord, His servants obtain honor.
