1Peace is enjoyed, meeting the Guru, the Spiritual Teacher.

2The Lord is the only Master; He is the only Minister. ||5||

3The world is held in bondage; he alone is emancipated, who conquers his ego.

4How rare in the world is that wise person, who practices this.

5How rare in this world is that scholar who reflects upon this.

6Without meeting the True Guru, all wander in ego. ||6||

7The world is unhappy; only a few are happy.

8The world is diseased, from its indulgences; it weeps over its lost virtue.

9The world wells up, and then subsides, losing its honor.

10He alone, who becomes Gurmukh, understands. ||7||

11His price is so costly; His weight is unbearable.

12He is immovable and undeceivable; enshrine Him in your mind, through the Guru's Teachings.

13Meet Him through love, become pleasing to Him, and act in fear of Him.

14Nanak the lowly says this, after deep contemplation. ||8||3||

15Aasaa, First Mehla:

16When someone dies, the five passions meet and mourn his death.

17Overcoming self-conceit, he washes off his filth with the Word of the Shabad.

18One who knows and understands, enters the home of peace and poise.

19Without understanding, he loses all his honor. ||1||

20Who dies, and who weeps for him?

21O Lord, Creator, Cause of causes, You are over the heads of all. ||1||Pause||

22Who weeps over the pain of the dead?

23Those who weep, do so over their own troubles.

24God knows the condition of those who are so affected.

25Whatever the Creator does, comes to pass. ||2||

26One who remains dead while yet alive, is saved, and saves others as well.

27Celebrate the Victory of the Lord; taking to His Sanctuary, the supreme status is obtained.

28I am a sacrifice to the feet of the True Guru.

29The Guru is the boat; through the Shabad of His Word, the terrifying world-ocean is crossed over. ||3||

30He Himself is Fearless; His Divine Light is contained in all.

31Without the Name, the world is defiled and untouchable.

32Through evil-mindedness, they are ruined; why should they cry out and weep?

33They are born only to die, without hearing the music of devotional worship. ||4||

34Only one's true friends mourn one's death.

35Those under the sway of the three dispositions continue to mourn on and on.

36Disregarding pain and pleasure, center your consciousness on the Lord.

37Dedicate your body and mind to the Love of the Lord. ||5||

38The One Lord dwells within the various and countless beings.

39There are so many rituals and religious faiths, their number is innumerable.

40Without the Fear of God, and devotional worship, one's life is in vain.

41Singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, the supreme wealth is obtained. ||6||

42He Himself dies, and He Himself kills.

43He Himself establishes, and having established, disestablishes.

44He created the Universe, and by His Divine Nature, instilled His Divine Light into it.

45One who reflects upon the Word of the Shabad, meets the Lord, without doubt. ||7||

46Pollution is the burning fire, which is consuming the world.

47Pollution is in the water, upon the land, and everywhere.

48O Nanak, people are born and die in pollution.

49By Guru's Grace, they drink in the Lord's sublime elixir. ||8||4||

50Aasaa, First Mehla:

51One who contemplates his own self, tests the worth of the jewel.

52With a single glance, the Perfect Guru saves him.

53When the Guru is pleased, one's mind comforts itself. ||1||

54He is such a banker, who tests us.

55By His True Glance of Grace, we are blessed with the Love of the One Lord, and are saved. ||1||Pause||

56The capital of the Naam is immaculate and sublime.

57That peddler is rendered pure, who is imbued with the Truth.

58Praising the Lord, in the house of poise, he attains the Guru, the Creator. ||2||

59One who burns away hope and desire through the Word of the Shabad,

60chants the Lord's Name, and inspires others to chant it as well.

61Through the Guru, he finds the Path home, to the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. ||3||
