Interview with the authentic disciple of the sorcerer. I am here in order to close the door of the lineage of don Juan: Castaneda
“I came to oblige you to move yourselves in an energetic revolution.”
Carlos Castaneda, the chacmol (guardian warrior) of all of the practitioners of tensegrity under his tutelage, affirms that “the problem of life and death is the only one that matters.”
Are we going to speak of the war in Bosnia? Of aids?
“The great tragedy is that we don’t want to change. We are carried to death and we don’t object. We want things proven, scientific. What are we talking about? Of the application of certain principals in order to resolve tautologies*: a bald man is he that does not have hair… and? That is not speaking of life and death. Don Juan said that we can’t help anybody, because if you do that they get angry at you, they insult you, they burn you, they kill you. For example that girl, Marcela, wants to change. Up until what point is she going to put up with the necessary pressure for the change. Now that’s another thing.”
(*Tautologous - True by virtue of it’s logical form alone. Redundant. -taut-to say -legin-more at legend. This is from Websters, and the other definitions seem to imply, limited or missing the point therein. Maybe you are already familiar with the word but I had to look it up:)
At twelve noon sharp, the reporter (feminine) hardly could believe what Lidia del Monte confirmed by telephone, “Carlos Castaneda is already in Mexico and invites you to dinner (lit.dine). I myself will pass by and pick you up to bring you to bring you to the meeting place. Remember that you can not bring cameras or recorders.”
The yaqui sorcerer don Juan Matus taught the anthropologist, converted into the sorcerers apprentice, “that one cannot insist.” When things are going to come out, they come out in a very simple and natural manner. In the moment in which you insist, the magic and power disappears.”
The meeting with Castaneda took place in an unexpected manner in a restaurant in the Polanco district. The reservation number C14 gave us access to a salon in whose extreme the author of the book, The Teachings of don Juan, was speaking animatedly with three women: Thalia Bay and Kylie Lundahl (scouts of the night) and Marcela, a young psychologist that collaborated in the organization of the seminar, “The new paths of tensegrity” which that weekend would impart, in our country, Castaneda himself.
The wrinkles in the face and the graying hair reveal that he is older than sixty, (“Don’t ask me my age because I won’t tell.”), and yet he is full of youthful energy.
A chatterer and wisecrack, the conversation of Castaneda is full of jokes and anecdotes. He constantly uses expressions like, ’shoot!’ [interrogatives], you (all) and you want [in forms that are formal and highbrow in a Mexican context]. Between joke and joke, that short dark-skinned man all of a sudden lets loose that he is out of time. “The expression ’they’ in reference to us is excessive; and the worst is about our cognitive body. We have to begin something new (…) Never the less at an early age we grow old, become senile, we speak without thinking, we repeat stupidities, as if we were turning on the automatic pilot. Nobody is aware of the error, and we repeat meaningless affirmations that perpetuate themselves.”
In shirt sleeves, don Carlos takes a piece of toast, folds it, and comments forcefully, “For example, this bread is fluffy (flabby). You eat it and you become flabby. In the same manner one takes on things as if it were nothing. What is the sorcerery of don Juan? Simply acting within oneself (…) In 1973 don Juan left, he extinguished himself (as with a flame). It was a pragmatic act like falling off a log. He died not like my grandfather died, sounding like he was having an orgasm and the last thing he said was, ‘little angel, little angel, I coming for you…”
Without the diners at the other tables imagining that next to them was to be found the very same Carlos Castaneda eating steak and potatoes, the afternoon slipped by slowly. He commented amusedly in various occasions of what they had added (to his words). Once he saw a television interview in which the supposed Carlos Castaneda affirmed to be part of a direct line with the toltec shamans of Sonora. The authentic disciple of don Juan makes a clarification. “The Toltec empire is a theoretic configuration. To be a Toltec is the same as saying, in the present, that we are democratic. So to speak of the Toltec shamans of Sonora is a true stupidity.
Castaneda remembers, “I was a very boring sloberer that drank red wine and who believed that I was a big shit. And don Juan died laughing and jested ‘here comes the subtle man. And what can you tell me about the carrot that is stuck up your ass?’ And I asked him how such an intelligent man could use such vulgar and gross metaphors, and don Juan responded to me that yes, but it was only most obvious. And I would burn up with anger, until I managed to leave my ego behind (…) Now I don’t need don Juan, but at the same time I do. It is a nameless love and at the same time it is a limitless independence…”
Before the announced hour, the salon was almost full in which Carlos Castaneda spoke before several thousand people, the introductory conference to “tensegrity”, he voiced that it mixed the terms “Tension” and “Integrity” and that they are expression that denote the two impelling forces of the magic passes of the shamans of pre-Columbian Mexico and that Castaneda shares openly because he affirms that he is a man that is not given to secrecy.
Multiple green signs state that the capacity of the seminar is completely full and that without exception no more payment will be accepted nor will anyone more be admitted. After identifying oneself and showing ones receipt of admission, the attendants of the seminar, The new paths of Tensegrity, pass by a security post, for a search and metal detector.
At 8 o’clock sharp, Castaneda entered the City of Mexico hall and charmed with his anecdotes and a delicious joking spirit to his enthusiastic readers and practitioners of tensegrity. The sorcery - he insisted on various occasions the length of the more than two and a half hours - is the art of interrupting the flow of a system of interpretation which permits us to know and manage the world (…) And I am here in order to close the door of the lineage of don Juan with an explosion; obliging you to think and move yourselves in an energetic revolution.”
